Before importing a Shopify CSV: check the image references

A product CSV can contain image references that look plausible but need a closer look. Here are four checks illustrated by the fictional demo bundled with our ShopMatrix utility. The sample uses example.org addresses, not real product images, and is not for import.

1. Look for local file paths.

A value such as C:\catalog\fern-front.jpg points to a file on a computer. It is not a public image URL. In our demonstration, the manually edited after-file uses a web URL instead. That example URL is illustrative; it does not prove an image exists there.

2. Review image positions within each product.

Our fictional before-file includes a zero position and repeated positions. The after-file assigns separate positive positions. This is a limited image-reference check, not a check of every product or variant relationship.

3. Read the alt text.

The demo includes a long string of repeated letters. Its manually edited replacement describes the image: "Handmade clay cup, side view". Check that your own descriptions are useful and fit the actual image.

4. Inspect suspicious URL syntax, then verify the real image separately.

The fictional variant URL ends in sage%GG.jpg, an invalid percent escape. The after-file uses sage-detail.jpg. Correct-looking syntax still cannot tell you whether the remote file is available, accessible or the right image.

What ShopMatrix does

Our local Python utility checks selected image-reference fields and writes a readable HTML report. It distinguishes observed issues, review advisories and unknowns. It does not fetch images, repair the CSV or import anything into Shopify. The original CSV stays unchanged. A report with no static issues is not an import guarantee.

The before/after changes in our demo were made manually. ShopMatrix did not perform those edits. No customer results or time savings are claimed by this fictional example.

Try the included workflow

ShopMatrix is a USD 7.99 one-time source-code download. It includes the fictional demonstration, setup instructions and a Windows launcher. Python 3.10+ and Tkinter are required; it is not a standalone EXE or an official Shopify app. Read the full requirements and limitations before buying:

If you try it, useful feedback is whether setup worked, what was confusing, and whether a finding helped. Use the store Contact page and a fictional example. Do not send customer data, private image URLs, credentials or unchanged reports.
