Woodworking doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, some of the most eye-catching yard decorations start with nothing more than a printable silhouette, a piece of plywood, and a jigsaw.
At Matoy, we specialize in printable woodworking templates that make it easy for anyone — beginner or pro — to bring their creative vision to life. Whether you're decorating for the holidays, personalizing your garden, or creating something fun for the kids, here's how to go from template to showstopper in just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Download and Print Your Template
Start by choosing your favorite design from our collection of free templates or explore our premium templates. Each listing includes a PDF file that prints across regular 8.5x11" paper — just like a puzzle, you tape the sheets together to create your full-size pattern. Every page includes a small number to make it even easier and a image preview showing all the pages put together.

Step 2: Transfer the Template onto Wood
Once your template is printed and taped together:
- Cut out the outer silhouette shape.
- Lay the pattern on your wood (we recommend 1/4" or 1/2" plywood for most yard projects).
- Use carbon paper, spray adhesive, or simply trace around the edge with a pencil.
Tip: You can also trace the cutout onto cardboard first, then use that as a reusable stencil!
Step 3: Cut the Shape
Using a jigsaw or scroll saw, carefully cut along your traced lines.
No jigsaw? No problem. Many of our designs are simple enough to be cut with a handsaw, making them perfect for first-time DIYers or weekend projects with kids.
Step 4: Sand and Paint
Smooth out the edges with sandpaper (80 to 120 grit works well) and get ready to add some personality!
Here are a few paint ideas:
- Acrylic or outdoor latex paint for bold, weatherproof colors
- Chalk paint for rustic or farmhouse style
- Glow-in-the-dark paint for Halloween fun
- Or keep it natural with a wood stain!

Step 5: Display It Proudly
For standing decorations:
- Attach a stake to the back and push it into the ground.
- Use a small wood base for porch or indoor display.
- Hang it on a fence or wall using simple hooks or outdoor tape.
✅ Pro Tip: Seal your painted piece with clear outdoor polyurethane to protect it from the elements!
