At Matoy, we want to make downloading and using our printable templates as smooth as possible. Whether you’re working on a classroom display, party wall decor, or a fun family project, you'll often receive your files in a format called a ZIP folder.
But what exactly is a ZIP folder? And how do you open it on different devices?
Let’s break it down 👇
💡 What is a ZIP Folder?
A ZIP folder is a compressed file that contains multiple files bundled together. It’s like a suitcase packed with your downloaded files — neat, organized, and ready to unzip when you arrive at your creative destination.
We use ZIP folders to:
- Group related files (like silhouette + full-color versions)
- Reduce download size
- Make delivery easier and faster
Once downloaded, you'll need to “unzip” or extract the files before using them.
💻 How to Open a ZIP Folder on a Windows Computer
Most Windows computers come with built-in tools to handle ZIP files. Here's how:
Using File Explorer:
- Right-click the ZIP folder you downloaded.
- Select “Extract All…”
- Choose a folder location where you'd like the files to be saved.
- Click “Extract.”
That’s it! Your unzipped files will appear in the folder you chose, ready to print and enjoy.
🍎 How to Open a ZIP Folder on a Mac
Mac users, this one’s super easy:
Using Finder:
- Simply double-click the ZIP folder.
- Your Mac will automatically extract the contents into a new folder in the same location.
No additional software needed — your files will be ready in seconds.
📱 How to Open a ZIP Folder on a Mobile Device
Mobile devices can also handle ZIP folders — here’s how, depending on your operating system.
On iPhone or iPad (iOS):
- Open the Files app.
- Tap the ZIP folder.
- It will automatically extract and create a new folder with the contents inside.
On Android:
- Open your favorite file manager app.
- Tap the ZIP file.
- Some Android phones extract automatically, but if not, tap “Extract” or “Open with…” and choose an appropriate app.
Using a Third-Party App (for both iOS and Android):
If your device doesn’t support built-in extraction, download an app like:
- WinZip
- RAR
- iZip
These apps allow you to locate the ZIP folder and extract the contents easily.
