GENDERLESS

Eight years ago, fashion student Maxine Britt was looking for gender neutral clothing brands to work for after graduating, but all they saw were beige tracksuits, graphic tees with a gay phrase of the week, and $400 denim onesies that stopped as a size large. Frustration with the industry led them to publish multiple IRB-certified research projects on trans and nonbinary people's needs from fashion, but they didn't stop there. Mx Apparel Design became their fulltime job, a brand centered around size-inclusivity, creative fit solutions, and self-expression. The brand grew to reach millions online and sell internationally thanks to educational content deconstructing gender and fashion.

The structure of this book utilizes a series of interview questions that were asked to different community members, offering opinions of researchers, models, fellow designers, and consumers, woven into the story of Mx Apparel. Through this book, learn what it takes to make your dreams come true in an industry that tries to box you in.

ABOUT MX

Created by Twin Cities designer Maxine Britt (she/they), Mx Apparel Design is based on the idea that fashion is a key tool for self expression and that gender "neutral" apparel should never be boring. The brand seeks to center trans and nonbinary shoppers through research into their needs and exclusively hiring trans and nonbinary models. Everyone is welcome to support the line and explore genderless fashion. Learn more about this design philosophy through Maxine's debut novel GENDERLESS.

Through graphic shapes and bold color, Maxine hopes to broaden understandings of what fashion can be while helping gender nonconforming people wear clothes that feel like them. Follow @mxappareldesign on TikTok here for more about Maxine's design process.

All garments are made in Minneapolis by Maxine and assistant Zoe, with the help of family-owned production sewers Liz Apparel, in small batches. Pricing is kept at wholesale to keep trans- and size-inclusive fashion as affordable as possible. Thank you for supporting independent, locally made fashion!

Production is currently on hiatus.
