Where Magic is Queer & the Empire is Afraid

The Charley's Song Trilogy takes place in real world 1848, just after the second French Revolution, over the span of a year. An era when many European nations fought for liberation against controlling autocracies and class inequality, as the poor demanded change. Meanwhile, superstition still held sway and magic was seen as sorcery.
The story is set on three fictional islands in the Indian Ocean, known as The Doryan Empire, where grain is the main source of economic wealth. A land once protected by an earth goddess who'd been forgotten during Christian colonization.
The tale weaves together mythology (inspired by Celtic, Slavic, and Greek folklore), elemental magic, political upheaval, trauma, gender transformation, and a touch of sci-fi, set in the confines of a 19th century patriarchal society.
Riveting... lyrical and powerful. Charley feels like a kick ass hero with a strong sense of self and confidence.
I was cracked open and invited into my own healing journey, and my own magic.
This book is cinematic, and many times I forgot I was reading.
