When I was a little girl, maybe 8 years old - I remember driving in the back of the car with my little toddler sister. She was queasy and complaining that her tummy hurt. I reached over, and put my hands on her belly. I closed my eyes, and concentrated. I didn't know what I was doing, but I did know it was the right thing to do. I remember knowing deep in my being, I knew that I could make her better. After a few moments, she breathed a sigh of relief, happy that her tummy wasn't sore anymore, and I, happy that she was happy, sat back into my seat and looked out the window - bracing myself against my sudden tummy ache.
Fast forward to my adult years, my husband complaining of a sore shoulder, or a sore neck, and me, obliging a massage. I love massaging people - there's just something about touching people with healing intent, getting into their energy and setting things right. Feels wholesome, and so fulfilling. When my hands get hot with pure healing love - that is the best feeling in the world - I could go all day. Yet I would find I would go to bed, and wake up in the morning with whatever had ailed my husband the night before. Left shoulder? My left shoulder would be sore. Right side of the neck? You betcha.
So that got me thinking - what was I doing wrong? Was this what I was destined to do, my healing limited only to my own capacity to hold this pain for them? To be a container that transmuted their pain into my own? That did not feel right intuitively - and I found myself drawn to learning about energy healing, and reiki. Eventually, I found a reiki master - and finally learnt the difference.
What I was doing, was giving away my own life source energy, and it was draining me - hurting me. I'm sure most of us can think of examples where we give ourselves to something/someone, pour our energy into it/them, and are left feeling DRAINED! Of course there are many possible subtle energetic reasons for this, or more fundamental reasons like your human design - but I digress. Often, I believe, we can find the root cause in us giving our life force energy away. Sometimes, you might be happy to share some of your life force energy - in small amounts, and with people who are really close to you, your partner, or your children for example. I used to think that my energy was strong and pure, and could heal anything. And look, maybe it could. But what good is that for sustaining my own energetic balance? Instead, I learned to tap into source energy.
I access this through a simple visualisation. (I have been initiated into Usui Reiki, so perhaps my experience might be slightly different, I don't know, but I honestly do believe that as energetic beings, the Universe expressing itself in human form, we are all capable of this). First, I ground myself. (For more detail on that, see here). And once I am successfully calm and centred, I feel my crown chakra opening, and a bright beam of light descending from the heavens and connecting to it. Fun little food for thought - I used to picture this as a relatively thin beam, maybe the width of a pole you might see a street sign on. But I was on my Reiki Masters website, and she has a visual on there of her with a HUGE beam of light thundering down from the heavens. So why not, receive as much as you are happy and comfortable receiving! Another fun little fact, when doing reiki on a being higher vibrationally than you, their energy intake can be higher than you can easily provide. When I do reiki on my master, I feel so faint and dizzy like I can't even stand up. Conversely, when I had a student practicing reiki on me, it felt like being parched out on the desert for a month and then she came along to give me water, but I could only drink it through a tiny little straw. In instances where this happens, where vibrationally there might not be a big disparity but the thirst for energy is strong, a common theme seems to be almost a shaking, and eyelid fluttering sensation. I find that flow of energy behind my third eye intensifies. Anyway, off topic, but I thought it was interesting to mention!
When the light enters my body, I feel it filtering through every cell - vibrating and healing me. Feeling me with pure love, pure source energy. And I personally, get a sensation in my head, in my third eye and behind my actual eyes which feels like a very soft gentle pressure - with almost a little bit of light. Sometimes my whole head feels like I have champagne bubbles pouring over it. And this beautiful energy, flows through my whole body, and out of my hands into whatever I am doing.
Whenever I have used this technique whilst massaging my husband, he reported the most wonderful relaxing massage with the sore patch feeling much much better - and importantly for my own well-being, I have stopped taking on other peoples pain. If I do sense that someone is carrying some darker, denser energy in the form of pain, or stagnant energy, I visualise myself grounding them and then sending this energy of theirs down their column of grounding light. Never taking it onto me and sending it down through mine, as I have found this "dirties" me and then I am more likely to retain some of the pain or discomfort in my body. The same goes during reiki treatments, I have a knack where in a massage or during reiki, one of the reasons I feel I am so effective, is because I can feel in my body, what they are feeling in theirs. This is what guides me, these phantom mirror experiences. But if I'm not careful and I don't observe protecting my energy - I can find myself retaining what is not mine.
Which brings me to; "empaths". This word is thrown around a lot these days, and in truth, I think as energetic human beings, you would have to be an absolute dud to not pick up on at least some sort of energy. We can sense when someone is in a bad mood, or when you walk into a room right after someone's had a fight, right? This topic is probably worthy of a whole post of its own, but for now all I will say here is; during these complicated times where the collective consciousness is undergoing such a radical shift, globally, it is to be expected that some of us will feel that more keenly than others. In human design as well, if you have certain centers open or undefined, you are more likely to take in the energies of others around you, confusing yourself and feeling like this is your own "stuff". A clear and easy way to touch on it and check, is to ask yourself "Is this mine to process?". And then listen to your body. Usually, if it's not yours, and just something you picked up as you were going about your day, the sensation of anxiety/dread/stress/whatever it may be manifesting as, will start to dissolve. If it doesn't, and sticks around just check in with yourself and see how this could be something that you need to work through. You could try cutting cords, journalling on it, meditating, breath work, tapping, or whatever tools you have at your disposal that help you sit with your feelings and process them.
And lastly, this wouldn't be an article on protecting your energy if I didn't mention the practice of visualising yourself surrounded by light, or a bubble, or whatever it is that pleases you. Just close your eyes, and with strong intention of protection and safety, picture your preferred visualisation. You can say something like "only love can enter my space" or "I am love". I additionally love to add that anything that anyone sends my way, is lovingly returned to them. If someone is praying for me and sending me all of the beautiful things that life has to offer. Thank you so much you angel of a person, may you be blessed. If you are sending me nasty thoughts, even if it's not intentionally maliciously directed at me, then thank you for the energy you are trying to send me, but, have it back. You reap what you sow, and I am sowing my own energetic seeds.
You can do this for yourself, your family, your home, your car, whatever you desire! You can even use reiki to protect all of the above.
Try these tips out, and see if you notice yourself feeling any better!
Lots of Love Always
