7 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Weight-Loss Journey
By Ouu Luna | The Deficit Girl

If I could go back to the very beginning of my weight-loss journey, there are so many things I would tell myself.
I thought I needed more discipline.
I thought I needed to completely change the way I ate.
I thought one “bad” meal could ruin everything.
And honestly? I spent way too much time starting over.
If you’re currently trying to lose weight, change your eating habits, or simply feel better in your body, I want you to know something:
You don’t have to do everything perfectly to make progress.
Here are seven things I wish I understood sooner.
1. You Don’t Have to Be Perfect
This was probably the hardest lesson for me.
I’d have a great few days, then I’d eat something that wasn’t part of my plan and immediately think:
“Well, I already messed up. I’ll start again Monday.”
And that mindset can turn one meal into an entire weekend—or even an entire month.
One meal doesn’t define your progress.
One day doesn’t define your journey.
You don’t have to wait until Monday.
Your next choice can simply be your next choice.
2. Stop Looking for the “Perfect” Diet
There is always another diet.
Another challenge.
Another food trend.
Another person online telling you exactly what you should and shouldn’t eat.
But the best approach is usually the one you can realistically maintain.
If your plan requires you to completely eliminate every food you love, eat meals you hate, and follow a schedule that doesn’t fit your life, how long are you realistically going to stick with it?
Instead of asking:
“What’s the fastest way to lose weight?”
Try asking:
“What changes can I realistically maintain?”
That question changed everything for me.
3. Your Favorite Foods Don’t Have to Disappear
Pizza.
Pasta.
Dessert.
Burgers.
Whatever your thing is—you don’t necessarily have to say goodbye forever.
Learning about portions, nutrition, and how different foods fit into your overall eating pattern can help you make more intentional choices without feeling like you’re constantly punishing yourself.
Food isn’t something you need to be afraid of.
It’s part of life.
And your lifestyle needs to be something you can actually live.
4. Hunger Isn’t a Character Flaw
If you’re constantly hungry, miserable, and thinking about food all day, that doesn’t automatically mean you need more willpower.
It may mean your approach needs adjusting.
Pay attention to how you’re feeling.
Are your meals satisfying?
Are you getting enough protein and fiber?
Are you drinking enough water?
Are you eating regularly?
Are you trying to cut your intake so aggressively that you’re struggling to function?
Sometimes the answer isn’t more discipline.
Sometimes it’s a better strategy.
5. Your Progress Won’t Always Be Obvious
This one is important.
You may have weeks where the scale doesn’t seem to cooperate.
That doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
Progress can also look like:
- Feeling more confident
- Having more energy
- Being more consistent
- Making better food choices
- Cooking at home more often
- Feeling stronger
- Developing healthier routines
- Not giving up after one difficult day
Don’t let one number convince you that your effort doesn’t matter.
6. You Have to Stop Starting Over
This might be my biggest piece of advice.
Stop thinking you have to “start over.”
You don’t.
You simply continue.
Had a big dinner?
Continue tomorrow.
Skipped your workout?
Continue the next day.
Had a rough week?
Continue this week.
You aren’t back at zero.
Everything you’ve learned is still with you.
Every attempt teaches you something about yourself, your habits, and what does—or doesn’t—work for your life.
7. Make Your Goals About More Than a Number
Wanting to lose weight is completely valid.
But don’t make the scale the only reason you’re doing this.
Maybe you want to feel comfortable in your clothes.
Maybe you want more energy.
Maybe you want to feel stronger.
Maybe you want to build confidence.
Maybe you simply want to prove to yourself that you can keep a promise to yourself.
Whatever your reason is, write it down.
Because there will be days when motivation disappears.
And on those days, your why can matter more than your motivation.
You Don’t Need to Become a Different Person
You don’t have to wake up tomorrow and completely reinvent yourself.
You don’t need a perfect meal plan.
You don’t need six workouts a week.
You don’t need to punish yourself for eating something you enjoyed.
Start with something small.
Make one better choice.
Then another.
Learn what works for you.
Adjust when something isn’t working.
And keep going.
Because this isn’t about becoming someone else.
It’s about becoming the version of yourself you feel proud of.
