Discover the Collectability of W Mint Mark Quarters

What's so special about “W” Mint Mark Quarters? One reason the “W” mint mark is sought after is that it indicates that a coin was produced at the West Point Mint, which is known for producing high-quality coins. The West Point Mint has a reputation for producing coins that are well-struck and have a high level of detail and clarity.

The West Point Mint is located in West Point, New York, and has been in operation since 1937. It was originally established as a storage facility for gold and silver bullion. It has since become one of the main mints in the United States, producing a wide variety of coins, including gold and silver American Eagle coins, American Buffalo gold coins, and Platinum American Eagle coins, as well as medals and commemorative coins.

The West Point Mint uses modern equipment and technology to produce its coins. It has strict quality control measures in place to ensure that the coins it produces meet high standards of quality and craftsmanship.

Relative scarcity is the other reason the “W” mint mark quarters are sought after. Of 11.9 billion quarters minted, only 10 million were minted with the “W” mint mark in 2019 and another 10 million in 2020 – 2 million of each design. It may seem like a lot, but with just 2 million of each design in circulation, those quarters are considered somewhat condition scarce.

In addition, West Point minted quarters released for 2020 were adorned with the “V75” Privy Mark, honoring the 75-year anniversary of the victory in WWII. The design carries the “V75” inside the shape of the Rainbow Pool inside the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.

The value of a “W” mint mark quarter, like any coin, can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors. It's important to note that the value of a “W” mint mark quarter can also be affected by market conditions and other external factors. Here are some specific things that can affect the value of a “W” mint mark quarter:

  • Condition: The condition of a coin refers to its overall appearance and state of preservation. A quarter in excellent condition, with no visible wear and tear, will generally be worth more than a quarter that is heavily circulated and shows signs of wear.

  • Demand: The demand for a particular coin can also influence its value. If there is a high demand for a particular “W” mint mark quarter among collectors, it may be worth more.

  • Special finishes: Some “W” mint mark quarters may have been specially finished for collectors, such as those with a proof finish. These quarters may be worth more than those produced for circulation.
