About Me
I had a difficult time at school, as I was to discover in later life due to undiagnosed autism. I was only good at two subjects chemistry and history. The only two careers which combined these subjects were tomb raider or archaeologist. There wasn't much call for either in the sleepy town of Stourbridge where I live, so I decided to pursue a career in pure chemistry and see where it led. I did my A levels and was accepted on to BSc. Honours degree in Applied Chemistry with Computing at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. In this internet age, it is hard to believe we learned to program in PASCAL, learned to code on a mainframe computer and there was great excitement when we got these new fangled computers in my last year which could run Windows 3.1. I remember thinking Windows was a very clunky interface which crashed a lot and would never catch on. I graduated in 1990 with a 2:1 honours degree, and went on to complete a PhD. degree in Lanthanide Chemistry. Despite the fact I got several scientific papers published from my thesis, I realised it wasn't the most employable degree topic. A comment from one job interviewer when I told him my PhD. thesis title 'Lanthanides that's that bit at the bottom of the periodic table nobody cares about isn't it?' confirmed this. I had always been interested in environmental issues and got an offer to work in the Air Pollution research group of Prof Roy Harrison and again did some interesting work which led to research publications. I stayed in the group until 2006 when funding dried up. After a lot of soul searching I studied Reiki, Crystal Therapy and set up my own business 'Roy's Holistic Therapies' in 2008. In 2009 I also studied Indian Head Massage and found this dramatically increased my client base and I was able to make a part-time living from doing holistic therapies. Since then I have been lucky enough to work as massage therapist at popular festivals such as V festival, Wilderness, Somersault, Buddhafield and most notably Glastonbury. This has led to some extraordinary experiences, including in 2015 an audience with the Dalai Lama in the Stone Circle field at Glastonbury festival. My work in holistic therapies increased my interest in self-help and energy work and ultimately led to publication of my e-book. Like most people my life has not been smooth, but you can never say it was dull and nothing happened in it. This is best summed up by a quote from Franklin D Roosevelt ' A calm sea never made a skilled sailor'.
