Japan's urban boats are useful transport, not just cruises. Three easy examples let you replace a rail segment with a waterfront view: Asakusa to Odaiba in Tokyo, Yokohama Station to Yamashita Park, and Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima.
1. TOKYO: ASAKUSA TO ODAIBA
TOKYO CRUISE links Asakusa with Odaiba Seaside Park. The operator currently lists Hotaluna and Emeraldas one-way fares of JPY 2,000 for adults and JPY 1,000 for children, with scheduled travel times of about 55 to 65 minutes depending on the vessel.
This route works best as a one-way sightseeing transfer: visit Asakusa first, then arrive beside Odaiba's waterfront instead of returning to a subway station.
Reservations are recommended for the Asakusa–Odaiba route on Himiko and Hotaluna. The operator also sells same-day tickets on a first-come basis, but some services do not operate every day and sailings can be cancelled in bad weather.

2. YOKOHAMA: SEA BASS AS TRANSPORT
Yokohama Sea Bass connects four waterfront stops: Yokohama Station East Exit, Hammerhead, Pier Aka-Renga and Yamashita Park. The direct run between Yokohama Station East Exit and Yamashita Park takes about 20 minutes according to the operator's FAQ.
The current adult fare table lists JPY 1,500 between Yokohama Station East Exit and Yamashita Park. Shorter waterfront sections are cheaper. Not every sailing calls at every pier, so read the symbols in the timetable before building a fixed route.
Regular services are generally purchased from the ticket machine on the day. Individual advance reservations are not offered for ordinary Sea Bass services; telephone reservations are for groups of 15 or more. Arrive at least 10 minutes before departure to buy the ticket and complete boarding procedures.

3. HIROSHIMA: MIYAJIMAGUCHI TO MIYAJIMA
JR West Miyajima Ferry publishes a one-way adult fare of JPY 180 and child fare of JPY 90. A separate JPY 100 Miyajima Visitor Tax is charged when entering the island, with stated exemptions including preschool children.
IC cards are accepted, and eligible Japan Rail Pass and JR-WEST Rail Pass holders can use the ferry. From Miyajimaguchi, services between 9:10 and 16:10 normally use the route designed to give a front view of Itsukushima Shrine through the Great Torii. High tide or operational conditions can change that route.

THE RULE THAT PREVENTS MOST PROBLEMS
Check the operator's same-day service page before leaving the hotel. Wind, high tide, inspection work and seasonal timetables can change boat operations more easily than an ordinary urban rail trip. Keep a rail or road alternative in mind when a boat is essential to a timed connection.
