Start with the hotel entrance
Your destination is the hotel door, not simply “Tokyo.” Save the accommodation name, Japanese address, check-in deadline and nearest useful station exit. Compare the whole journey: airport station, train changes, lifts and the final walk with your bags.
Check the train destination before buying
JR East lists a Narita Express route directly serving Shinjuku via Tokyo, Shinagawa and Shibuya. It also lists a separate route toward Yokohama and Ofuna. Check that the train and booked carriage match your intended destination; do not assume every N’EX goes to Shinjuku.
At the ticket counter, show your accommodation address and ask: “Does this train go directly to Shinjuku? Which departure, carriage and seat should I use?” Confirm the airport departure station, departure time and ticket requirements before heading to the platform. Allow time after landing for immigration, baggage collection and reaching the station.
Make a luggage plan
N’EX has luggage storage, but JR East says the large luggage area is limited and available without reservation on a first-come basis. A train seat reservation does not guarantee space for every suitcase. Keep valuables with you, follow crew instructions and do not block aisles or doors.
If several transfers or a long hotel walk are difficult, compare an alternative with staff using the same hotel address. A cheaper fare is not automatically the easiest arrival with luggage.
Save the final walk before boarding
Take screenshots of the hotel address, useful station exit and walking route. Check whether the hotel recommends a particular entrance or route with lifts. If arrival is delayed, recheck available departures and tell the hotel if its check-in deadline may be missed. Do not rush onto an unfamiliar train based only on an old screenshot.
