Tokyo Arrival: Your First 90 Minutes Without Guesswork

Use this as an order of tasks, not a deadline

Your first arrival decisions are easier when you make them in sequence. “90 minutes” is a planning framework, not a promise that immigration, baggage collection or the journey to Tokyo will finish within that time. Queues, flight delays and your destination change the timing.

Before leaving the arrivals area

1. Check connectivity: open your accommodation details while online and save screenshots for offline use.

2. Confirm the destination: keep the hotel’s exact name, Japanese address, check-in instructions and contact method together.

3. Decide about luggage: will you carry it, store it or arrange delivery? Confirm the destination hotel accepts delivery and ask the carrier when it will arrive before handing it over.

4. Check payment: make sure you have a usable way to buy the chosen ticket. Ask the counter if you are unsure which ticket or seat reservation is required.

Choose the journey to your hotel door

Compare train changes, lifts and the walk from the final exit, not just the fastest journey shown in an app. Show the hotel address to transport staff and confirm the service, departure station and destination before paying. At Narita, check whether your N’EX departure serves the Shinjuku route or the separate Ofuna route.

Save your final station exit and walking route before boarding. Keep tickets, passport and small essentials accessible; avoid opening a large suitcase in a busy passage.

Keep a fallback for delays

If your flight or baggage is late, recheck the available service instead of relying on a preflight timetable screenshot. Contact the hotel if check-in instructions or reception hours could become a problem. If a transfer feels too tight, ask staff for the next workable route rather than rushing with bags.

Before walking out of the final station, pause and confirm the exit, hotel address and route. A short check is easier than dragging a suitcase back through a large station.
