Salvatore John Sgroi was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and is an image creator with a love for mood, atmosphere, and authentic abstraction. Film and music have both been enormous inspirations for Salvatore since he was very young.
As of 2025, Salvatore has created a series titled "The Conversation." These images span from 2012 to the present day. The focus is on people going about their day-to-day lives—engaged in conversations that range from the mundane to the dramatic, and sometimes even the comical—with heart and an appreciation for the aesthetic of the overall image.
"I feel there is poetry in the everyday—if you look for it, love it, and feel the beauty that can be captured.
I believe black and white can create an interesting and complete abstraction when viewing the whole image.
I started thinking about how, as a culture, we’re so focused on our devices. I wanted to see people being people—looking at each other, reacting to one another, and being present."
With film noir as an inspirational lens—from high contrast to lo-fi tones—I left the door open to different street styles, with abstraction and noir at the forefront.
Now, putting this work into book form gave me the idea of a story—a movie—unfolding scene by scene.
The buildup and the metaphor.
With Volume 1.0 now released, this will be an ongoing series.
Currently, I worked in collaboration with DocuMag, a magazine-style format, on a project titled "You Can Be the One." It continues in the mystery and textures that I feel are necessary in the aesthetic framework of my expression—of the every-person within my own being, the connection, and the point of the moment…
when YOU CAN be the one.
