Before school starts again, take a moment to review the approachability and process of your
counseling office. Questions to ask yourself (and your team):
- Is your office inviting for students? Is it hidden, the door always closed, or the vibe doesn't feel welcoming? Do students know who their counselor is, how to find the counseling office, and when you are available?
- What resources do you have available for students to grab-and-go? Do you have food kits, hygiene kits, school supplies, mindfulness coloring sheets, fidget toys, grief resources, etc for students to grab-and-go?
- Do students know how to schedule an appointment with you? Every student in the school should know the process. Is it an online form, a QR code, a slip they fill out? Take the time to educate the students on the process.
- Do students know how to get help in a crisis situation? Make sure students know what tip line to call, which app to use, or which adult to notify in a crisis, during and after school hours.
- What is your availability for parents? Do parents know how and when to contact you? Take the time to educate parents on the best way to communicate with you.
- Do teachers know the best way to approach you? Make sure the teachers understand your role in the school and how they can best communicate with you.
