I’ve tried learning languages in different ways before, and I know how frustrating it feels to spend time studying but still struggle to say what you want when the moment comes.

When I started learning Korean, I decided to try something different. Instead of putting most of my energy into memorising random vocabulary, reading, and writing, I focused on reusable sentence patterns, speaking in full sentences, and listening to natural Korean.

After about two months of studying this way, I started seeing real progress. During my travels in Korea, I could make simple requests, speak with hotel staff, and communicate with locals in everyday situations. I also started catching phrases in BTS Weverse Lives and interviews that translations missed.

My goal has always been simple: I want watch BTS videos without reading the subtitles (so i can focus on their faces 😍) and to speak to locals during my travels.

That’s the same approach behind SpeakFirstCo. The workbooks are designed to help beginners build sentences, understand complete sentences, and get more comfortable with natural Korean speech. Reading and writing are still useful, but they aren’t the main focus.

I’m still learning too, so I understand the confusion, the overwhelm, and the feeling of wondering whether your studying is actually working. I created SpeakFirstCo to make the process feel clearer, more practical, and more encouraging for other beginners who simply want to start using Korean sooner. 💜
