There is no arguing that the basis of weight loss/gain is calories in versus calories out. In other words, if you want to lose weight, you need to "burn" more calories than you consume, and vice versa. Because of this fact, it is easy to get caught up in the notion that if you want to lose weight, you just need to eat less. BUT THIS IS WRONG.
If you simply eat the same way you have been, but just less, I can guarantee that you will feel hungry, irritable, resentful, and eventually "give up". Instead, here are 5 tips that will transform the way you think about dieting. Tip #5 might just change your life...
TIP #1: FOOD IS FUEL
When it comes to nutrition, it is vital that you focus on what you are eating. Food is fuel. Instead of running away from it, shift your mindset into focusing on fueling your body with healthy nutritious foods. I promise you that when you prioritize eating the good shit, you will feel less desire to eat the bad shit.
TIP #2: FUEL FIRST
Focus on eating food that helps you perform and feel your best FIRST. If you're craving a cookie, make sure to eat a full, healthy meal first. If you're still hungry for that cookie - eat it! Over time, your body will regulate and crave the healthy food, and you'll find yourself reaching for that cookie less, and when you do, enjoying it guilt free.
TIP #3: PROTEIN
By far the most important macronutrient to prioritize in meal planning is protein. Especially if you are physically active and looking to maintain or gain strength, you must be consuming protein in EVERY meal. Not only will protein help you build muscle (boosting metabolism), it will also help you feel full for longer.
TIP #4: FIBER
MORE MORE MORE fruits and vegetables. Not only do we need all the amazing vitamins and minerals to feel and look our best, but the fiber we get from fruit and veg is vital for digestive health, regulating blood sugar, and increasing the feeling of fullness.
TIP #5: ELIMINATE DISTRACTION
So many of us are guilty of eating distracted. Whether that's scrolling on our phone, watching Netflix, or even just lost in our thoughts, we so often are not present during meal time. When we eat distracted, it is very easy to overeat (eating beyond satiety) since we are less in tune with our bodies hunger cues and signaling. Even more, once we finish, we may find ourselves looking down at our empty plate thinking "wait, its finished?" and crave more. But it may not be that you're hungry for more food, but rather that you missed the experience, the conscious act of eating. Being mindful during meal time is crucial for many reasons. By eliminating distraction, we can properly enjoy our food! We can focus on the texture, the taste, and how our body feels in response. While food is fuel, we deserve to enjoy every bite of it, and it's a practice of mindfulness that will help us connect with our bodies and the present moment.
