Brushing your teeth regularly is something we all learn as children, and it's a habit we carry with us through the rest of our lives (hopefully). It is a routine so fundamental to our human behavior that if we met someone who just didn't, we would probably be astounded, appalled, and confused. This is because we all recognize the benefits of maintaining good oral hygiene. It's science and its simple. So, why don't we apply this to fitness?
Many people complain that maintaining a fitness routine into their lives is difficult to keep up. It is hard to maintain motivation, energy, and commitment to something that seems to just mess with your routine. That's where my "brushing your teeth" philosophy comes in.
Fitness has to become an activity in your life just like brushing your teeth. It must become a habit we develop that we can't imagine stopping. This means, having a regular time of day that you devote to your fitness regimen, a plan that you follow, and the right tools for the job. Thankfully, the how is so incredibly flexible, with endless options to accommodate your lifestyle.
The hardest part is the training, self-discipline, and proper planning to start "brushing your teeth". Set yourself up for success by setting aside the time on your calendar, having the right tools (a gym membership, a yoga mat, etc.) and allow yourself the time to form the habit. I promise, you'll look back and think to yourself "How was I not brushing my teeth before?!"
Once you create this habitual self love through fitness, you will start to recognize the absence of energy, fluidity, and strength when you "forget" to brush your teeth. It will become second nature, and you'll become in touch with that feeling when your body is craving movement, and you'll have the habit and lifestyle to nurture that need.
If you're feeling unsure where to start or how to making fitness a "brushing your teeth" lifestyle, I would love to support you on this journey. For personal training and life coaching inquiries, please email strongwithshira@gmail.com.
