"Think back a long, long time. Once upon a time we had VHS and fansubs and conventions of 100 people or so. And, we had a small group of us independent creators who were all buying our table space in the Dealers’ Room. Of course, we mostly all knew each other from previous events.

The time: October 5th-7th, 2001. The place: The Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. The venue: AnimeCon UK. I had been chatting with creator Hayden “Dock” Scott-Baron, who had just finished his comic ‘Attic’ and we were sharing table space for the event, I already knew Laura Watton from buying her ‘Biomecha’ comic in Sheffield Space Center (seriously, this comic store was a HAVEN for zines back in the day!). Keds dropped by, Sam “Subi” Brown joined up (later followed by Mary Beaird)… and Sweatdrop was born!"

"Back then Sweatdrop was just a few of us. We chatted on yahoo groups. We met at the one or two conventions a year that were available to us. We would share the cost of a table and we’d place our photocopied, stapled mini-comics onto that table and hope that someone may want to support our naive and hopeful endeavours. I remember running around the convention with glee when Dragon Heir #1 was printed. I couldn’t believe it was real. I kept it in my bag for months. We cared HARD. The group meant none of us were alone. We were each other’s cheerleaders and inspiration.

Over the years membership grew, group memberships turned into friendships, we added forums, we started to collaborate more, we started to get involved with workshops and outreach, an incredible community was forming...

We worked with companies like Artists & Illustrators magazine, Letraset, NEO Magazine, MCM Comic Con and Tokyopop; all in the name of encouraging creativity, evolving the UK scene and, at the same time, building our own portfolio of comics...which led to us ultimately setting Sweatdrop up as a publisher."
