I thought it would be a nice idea to chat about the sizing and choosing the size that is best for your needs. Firstly the sock pattern comes in two different styles of fit, a slouchy house sock (meant to be a second layer sock) and a fitted sock (meant to be worn within the house sock).
Both socks are worked from the same pattern the only difference is the needle size which changes the gauge and density of the fabric.
Let's start off with the Fitted sock:
Finished Circumferences: 17 [18: 20: 22: 23]cm, (6¾ [7: 8: 8¾: 9]in)
This is essentially done on a smaller needle to give a more snug fit, perfect for wearing underneath the slouchy pair and adding extra warmth. Following the Finished Circumferences size guide for around the ankle you can have anywhere between 1cm negative ease or 1cm positive ease any less than that will start to cause problems with the fit of your instep.
Slouchy Sock:
Finished Circumferences: 20 [23: 24: 26: 29]cm, (8 [9: 9½: 10¼: 11½]in)
This is knitted on a 4mm needle standard for DK weight yarns but has a floppier fabric and much more room which is why it's great as a layering piece alongside the fitted version or any other pair of socks or for larger/swollen feet that need more room.
The slouchy sock has 3 - 5cm positive ease on the fitted design and that is just due to a needle change.
Making the Slouchy sock work as a fitted sock for your larger foot needs:
If you are wanting the slouchy sock to be a "fitted version" for your larger feet then you will still need to work the design on a 4mm needle per the pattern instructions but the Finished Circumferences are what you need to look at and like the fitted sock you're wanting your sock to have anywhere between 1cm negative ease or 1cm positive ease to your ankle circumference for a nice fit.
If you have a larger foot and want a slouchy house sock (now don't hold me to this as I've not tested the sizing changes or the end result) but if you like an experiment and want to give it go then up your needle size to 4.5mm and work it on an Aran and see what happens but of course I haven't tested this and this will deepen your row gauge so your toe will be deeper and so less length in the straight of your foot will be needed.
I hope these little notes on sizing your sock was insightful for some of you.
