Hey, I’m Sean
I’ve been involved in the building Industry for 15 years.
I started my apprenticeship straight out of school with a high-quality residential building company. We build and renovated some amazing houses around wellington.
Once I was qualified I travelled overseas to pursue my dream of being a professional rugby player. Injuries and form meant I never fully reached my goal but while I was in England I had my first taste of building all by myself on some new estates in the beautiful north of England (Hull). That’s when I realised I actually knew what I was doing and took lots of confidence from that experience returning home with my focus switched more towards becoming a better builder than a better rugby player (though I was still trying).
Once I came back I returned to the company where I did my apprenticeship. I started running jobs and as I gained more experience I moved companies for new opportunities. I continued running jobs and working with Apprentices at different stages of the process.
In 2018 I decided to take a chance and go out on my own. I started out with 2 employees chasing every job we could. Now into our 5th year we have 7 employees and seem to be in a good rhythm away from work I am married with 2 kids who keep me and my wife very busy.
I started @theathomeapprentice Instagram page when I took 2 new apprentices on and they said they had been trying to find things on Youtube to help them a bit coming into it but there was nothing there for them. All they could find were videos of people “doing” building but no one “teaching” building. And when they did finally find teaching videos they were all US-based so not that transferable.
I’m not claiming to be the best builder going. I just want to help you get through your apprenticeship and make being in the building trade a little bit easier to learn and understand
