About The Finish Geek

Better finishes. Smarter painters.

The Finish Geek was built on a simple idea: good painting is about more than making something look pretty.

I'm AJ, a professional architectural sign painter with hands-on experience preparing, priming, spraying, and troubleshooting finishes on everything from aluminum and steel to plastics, acrylic, MDF, and wood.

I've worked with industrial coatings, automotive-style urethanes, primers, metallic finishes, and the everyday challenges of getting consistent results in a production environment.

And I've learned something important along the way:

β€œIt doesn't matter how good it looks if it doesn't stick where you put it.”

Why I Created The Finish Geek

When I was learning the trade, I wanted practical resources that explained why things went wrong, not just what settings to use.

Because the reality is that every coating system, substrate, spray gun, and shop environment introduces different variables.

A setting that works beautifully today might need adjusting tomorrow.

The Finish Geek exists to make that knowledge more accessible.

What You'll Find Here

Practical guides covering paint mixing, spray gun setup, adhesion, coating timing, paint defects, and troubleshooting.

No magic gun settings. No pretending every product behaves the same way.

Just straightforward explanations, practical diagnostic methods, and techniques you can apply to your own work.

My approach is simple:

Observe the problem. Identify the variables. Change one thing. Test. Record the result.

And always respect the applicable product Technical Data Sheets, equipment instructions, and safety requirements.

Who It's For

The Finish Geek is for apprentices, experienced painters, sign shops, and anyone who takes pride in producing a finish that doesn't just look good when it leaves the booth.

It should still look good when it reaches the customer.

Better finishes. Smarter painters.
