Summer Presence: Finding Joy in the Space Between Plans

There is something special about summer.

Something that feels a little different than all the other seasons.

The windows stay open a little longer. Dinner finds its way onto patios and back decks. Neighbours linger at the end of the driveway instead of hurrying inside. The air is warm enough for evening walks. And daylight stretches in a way that makes us feel like time slows down, and summer will go on forever.

Summer has a way of softening the pace of everyday life.

Or at least, it can.

It's easy to fill the summer months with plans. Vacations, festivals, family gatherings, gardening, road trips, barbecues, beach days. They are all wonderful things, and many of them become the memories we treasure.

But sometimes, in our excitement to make the most of summer, we forget to actually experience it.

The Space Between the Plans

A full calendar doesn't always mean a full heart.

Some of the most memorable moments of summer, the ones that stay with us long after the season has ended, they aren't the ones we planned months before. They're the unexpected ones:

Sitting outside after everyone has gone home.

Watching the sky change colour as the sun sets.

Sharing an unhurried conversation that comfortably drifts from one topic to another.

Hearing the breeze move through the trees.

Personally, I could spend all night listening to the crickets sing to each other. 🎇

It's hands-down my favourite sound of summer.

You may notice that there's something these moments all have in common: none of them are particularly productive. They're simply enjoyable.

And perhaps that's enough.

A Different Way to Think About Wellness

It seems as though wellness has almost become something we need to add to our lives. Another task. Another routine. Another thing to remember.

But presence isn't another thing to check off a list.

It's savoring your morning coffee before checking your phone.

Noticing the warmth of the sun on your shoulders.

Walking a little slower because there's nowhere you need to be.

Allowing yourself to do absolutely nothing for a little while, without feeling like you should be doing something else instead.

Summer has a gentle way of reminding us that rest isn't something we have to earn.

Our nervous system is always working to regulate and rebalance. The human body knows how to settle when we give it the opportunity. Sometimes all that's needed is enough space and the right conditions to do what it does best.

Sometimes all we really need is a quiet hour.

No rushing.

No multitasking.

Just an hour where we allow ourselves to simply be well.

This notion of allowing ourselves to be well is a thread you'll find woven through everything I share, from reflections in my blogs, to Reflexology sessions, Reiki treatments, guided meditations, and my Practices for Presence collection. None of them are about giving you one more thing to do. They're gentle invitations to pause, reconnect, and remember what it feels like to simply be.

Summer has a way of reminding us that life isn't only found in the big plans. It's also found in the spaces between them.

There are still so many days of summer ahead.

There are still sunsets to watch.

Still warm evenings to enjoy.

Still flowers to notice.

Still distraction-free conversations waiting to happen.

Still time to do absolutely nothing for a little while.

Still time to find a little joy in the space between the plans.

And yes, before long, the evenings will cool. The patio chairs will be put away. Another season will quietly take its place.

But today, summer is still here.

And maybe that's reason enough to slow down, look around, and let yourself enjoy it.
