I'm Shavonne, CEO of The Money Magnet Financial Coaching Services. My road to financial coach was wrought with a lot of personal debt. When I tell you I've been where you're at right now, I mean it. Before I get into my story let's talk a little about you.
You're probably wondering how did you let yourself get so far into debt that you're not sure how to dig yourself out? Or maybe you've sat at your kitchen counter and cried because your car was repossessed.
And maybe you just didn't know how to properly manage your money. I experienced the latter. I knew how to save I'd done it my whole life. My mother was frugal and my dad knew how to work his side hustle to get money anytime he needed. So let's just say I knew those things growing up but somehow between college and getting married everything I was taught went out of the window.
I got my first credit card in college with the promise of a T-shirt and a low interest rate. I called my mama cause I was proud of myself for getting my first credit card on my own. I didn't know that much about credit cards but she did warn me to use it only for emergencies.
Don't tell a 19-year-old ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES without explaining what constitutes an emergency. So at first I did use it for groceries when my meal plan ran out and then I bought a couple of club outfits and then some more stuff until I'd reach several hundred dollars.
Eventually I paid it off, TWICE.
Fast forward to being married to someone who didn't know anything about saving or managing money. Admittedly, I allowed the bad spending habits that he'd adopted infiltrate into my once-frugal lifestyle. Together we spent money we didn't have. He let people borrow our money without the promise of paying it back. I used my credit cards to buy things we should've budgeted for and the list goes on.
It wasn't totally his fault but I knew better about money. I knew how it could be spent responsibly. When we finally divorced I was deeper in debt than I'd ever been.
Eventually I had to get help from my family until I could tread water. Then I saw an ad for a financial coach. Of course I had no idea what that was, but the ad promised that this person could help me with my debt and finances. So I signed up and met my coach, Alisha.
I worked with Alisha for 2 years and continued building on the skills she taught me and eliminated over $13,000 worth of debt.
There were many nights I would lie awake in bed and wonder, how did I end up here? How did I let it get so bad that I didn't even know where to start?
Often, we know our spending is out of control, we know we should pay our bills on time but we don't. And then when it's time to face the consequences we head for the hills leaving behind a trail of debt, depression and self-doubt.
But I'm here to tell you there is a better way. You can get out of debt and you don't have to pay thousands of dollars for a year to a "debt repair specialist" to do it.
If I can get rid of over $13,000 and my clients get rid of over $28,000 then you can too. All it takes is that first step.
