About Me

Hello, readers! My name is Shawn Portwood, and I'm excited to share my knowledge of nutrition science with you. I'm a person with a passion for making a positive impact in the world and my love language to share is nutrition and all things nutrition science. I have a Bachelors of Science in Clinical Nutrition/Dietetics with a minor in Biology that I earned at Metropolitan State University of Denver in…. you guessed it Boca Raton, Florida! HA, Kidding, I got my BSc in Denver, CO. I then moved across the country to Amherst, Massachusetts to attend the University of Massachusetts where I earned a Masters of Science in Public Health Nutrition. I am currently completing a 10-month clinical dietetic internship at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN where upon completion, I will be able to sit for my board credentialing exam to become a Registered Dietitian. This coming fall of 2023, I will begin my PhD in Nutritional Biology at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, WI where I hope to explore the gut microbiome in a capacity that relates to major depressive disorder. I have suffered from manic depression for several years related to the death of my mother and I strongly believe that some answers about depression reside in the human gut and I aim to go exploring for those answers. Beyond my passion for nutrition, I am a proud non-combat United States Marine Corps Veteran, an avid runner and weight lifter, I am 250 lbs and have ran 2 full marathons and I am running my third later this year. I bet you don’t see that every day! I plan to write an entire “Blueprint” series of nutrition science books, starting with the Protein Blueprint.
