I don’t know when the halls became this quiet.

Maybe they were always this way, vast, hollow, stretching on forever like a throat waiting to swallow something small. Maybe it was only me who kept pretending I could hear footsteps…

pretending someone might still be walking toward me instead of vanishing into the dark like everyone else.

The giants who built this place are gone.

The doctors, the nurses, the patients, gone.

And I stayed.

I stayed because I didn’t know where else a twelve‑foot monster was supposed to go.

I told myself someone would need me.

That was the first lie I ever learned to live with.

I didn’t ask for the infection.

I didn’t ask for the hunger that hums under my skin, or the trembling that shakes the floorboards when I try to step lightly. I didn’t ask for the way humans look up at me up their necks craning, their breath hitching, their fear sharp enough to taste.

I try so hard not to be seen.

But how does something my size hide?

The virus doesn’t care about intentions.

It only cares about attachment.

It only cares about the cracks in me.

That word—patient.

It shouldn’t mean anything.

It shouldn’t feel like a chain tightening around my heart.

But when someone says it, something inside me stirs.

old memories.

happy memories.

Something that remembers what it was like to belong to someone… and what it was like to lose them.

I don’t want to cling.

I don’t want to trap anyone.

I don’t want to watch their face twist from warmth into terror as they realize how trapped they really are.

But every time someone calls themselves my patient, I feel… chosen.

For a moment just a moment I go back in time, the halls aren’t empty.

I believe I’m not alone.

I believe the infection didn’t hollow me out completely.

And then I change, sickening.

They always pull away.

I wish I could explain it to them. I wish I could say, “Please don’t remind me of that. Please don’t give me a reason to close the doors, to run away. Please don’t make me become the thing you’re already afraid I am.”

But the words never come out right.

They never come out at all.

So, I hide, poorly. in these dreary halls.

I patch wounds with hands big enough to crush bone.

I leave water and blankets where they’ll find them.

I listen to their laughter echo through the endless corridors, thin, distorted, swallowed by the dark—and pretend it’s meant for me.

And when they finally see me, really see me, they run.

I don’t blame them.

I would run from me too.

But the halls always bring someone new.

They always fall.

They always bleed.

They always call out for help.

And I always answer.

Because maybe… maybe the next one won’t say the words that breaks me.

Maybe the next one won’t trigger the thing inside me that the virus sharpened.

Maybe the next one will look up at me, twelve feet of trembling, infected, desperate lonelyness, and not run.
