About Me
Mweru is an artist, poet, and author born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. She grew up in a pioneering family—the first Black-owned paint manufacturer in the country—and is the middle of three daughters.
From a young age, Mweru struggled with self-expression. A debilitating stutter and the challenges of discovering her sexuality in a society that condemned and criminalized homosexuality shaped her early years. Yet, these obstacles became the soil from which her creativity and resilience grew.
She developed bold personas to navigate her world, most famously Mr. Eve, a daring experiment in self-expression in which she wore her father’s clothes to explore and refine her androgynous style. This persona broke barriers in Nairobi’s cultural scene, earning her recognition in newspapers, magazines, music videos, and more. Through it all, she realized that space is not always given—it is often created.
Mweru later moved to America, where she continued to navigate identity and perception, confronting new labels, including “immigrant,” while deepening her understanding of self, community, and artistic freedom. Her work reflects a lifelong journey of challenging masks, embracing authenticity, and celebrating the power of roots and self-expression.
