I was -15 years old- on a trip with my parents to the Orient. We spent time in Tokyo, Japan and I was thinking/heard there were stellar deals on American musical instruments-AND-worked as many jobs as one my age could to be prepped to get a deal. So I go to this music store-Downtown Tokyo- to check out some guitars and basses. No doubt the Japanese hospitality was gushing to make a sale...so here we hook to this Fender Jazz bass and before I could play the first note... this guy walks up and says..."ya wanna jam"...of course with the colloquial accentuations...lol...
so we tune together... then the usual question...whadya know?
Well this local had just returned from Ohio and he knew only one song..."Mississippi Queen"...so off we go...da,da da da,dah,dah....then here comes the tour guide(Who was a LOOKER and the locals would stop just to admire her) knifing her way through the crowd saying..."you gotta go...your creating an international incident"...whaaaaat....this place became packed in minutes with dozens upon dozens upon dozens of locals whom began grabbing instruments....I mean all the front doors were wide open with people trying to crowd in and stuff inside this one music store...it was like someone was standing at the sales counter giving away YEN.
My new found friend and I were standing there looking at each other...is this not awesome or..."whaaaat"... little to our attention...the management of the store whom were originally quasi-tolerant for the customer draw...but soon it was becoming clear to them that they had three times as many people in the store than there were instruments!...when I could finally peek through...those management types were disturbed to say the least...I mean...really freakin out...
Well...my Princess to the rescue...gently nudged us both through a safe passage...One of those OMG moments...really KEWL...but unquestionably revealing...here I am-country boy from Mississippi- and on the other side of the world...clueless to the language...but didn't have to say one WORD!...well...just a few in my Southern Drawl...well at least I picked up on...MICHACHIPPI KAAWEEEN...Mississippi Queen...
I KNEW THEN...NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK A WORD OF JAPANESE...THAT MUSIC WAS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE!!!
