How to Tell That Your Own Gift Is Unwanted

Have you received a gift that you suspect has been re-gifted? There are certain signs you can look for to determine whether your own gift was unwanted.

It is common for people to re-gift things they don’t want, like, or need. So, let’s take a look at some of the signs you have received an unwanted gift.

Read the Tag

It might sound a little too obvious but reading the tag can be a real giveaway. A surprising number of people completely forget about the tag, leaving the original on that is addressed to an entirely different person. So, start by checking the tag to see who it is addressed to and whether there is a message accompanied with the gift.

The Gift Doesn’t Appear to Be New

It’s hard to believe, but some people try to pass off old gifts as new ones. That is, the gift has been used but they wrap it up and present it as brand new.

You can’t always tell when a gift has been used. However, you can look at the wrapping to get a good idea. Does the gift come with its original packaging? If not, it’s likely an unwanted gift. Check for signs of wear and tear too, such as tiny scratches or finger marks.

You Remember the Giver Getting the Gift

If the gift seems familiar, it could be because you were there when the giver received it themselves. They may have even moaned to you about the gift at the time. Over time, they forget you know about the unwanted gift and mistakenly give it to you.

This is a sure sign they didn’t really think about the gift they were giving you and they are trying to get rid of it by passing it on.

It Isn’t a Recent Gift

Often, unwanted gifts aren’t new. That is, they have been around for at least a year. They may even have the old dates on them when they were purchased. If the gift isn’t a recent one, you can bet it’s an unwanted gift.

What to Do If You Receive an Unwanted Gift

If you do discover that you have received an unwanted gift, the best way to handle it is to say nothing. Even though it has been re-gifted, it is still a gift. So, smile, thank the recipient and tell them you appreciate the gift. Don’t let them in on the fact that you know it is their unwanted gift.

You can always sell or donate the gift if you don’t want it. Receiving an unwanted gift isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They might not have liked it, but it could be something you like and are going to use frequently. They may also have given you a gift that they received because they are having financial difficulties at the moment. So, avoid bringing it up and graciously accept the gift to avoid any awkwardness.
