One Honest Question

Some photography lessons begin with complicated questions, but Laura’s didn’t. She simply held up her phone, showed me a picture she loved, and asked, “Can you teach me to take a photo like this?”

We met in the Rose Garden at Poole Park on a bright, sunny morning, the kind of light that makes colours glow and encourages you to slow down. The roses were opening beautifully, and the dandelions were catching the sun in that delicate, shimmering way that makes you want to lean in closer.

For an hour we wandered through the flowers, learning how to see small details, how to use natural light, and how a phone camera can capture softness and texture when you give it time. Laura quickly found her rhythm, creating gentle, ethereal images of roses and dandelion seeds, each one sparkling with tiny droplets. It was lovely to watch her confidence grow with every shot.

Afterwards, we walked to the café by the lake — a perfect place to pause, breathe, and look through her images. Over coffee, we explored simple editing techniques to enhance what she had already captured so well. Nothing heavy, nothing complicated, just small adjustments that brought out the beauty she had seen in the garden.

A relaxed morning, a new photographer discovering her eye, and a reminder that creativity often begins with a single, honest question.
