Advent Calendar Ideas That Aren't Chocolate

Chocolate advent calendars are over in about four seconds a day, and by December 10 the novelty has usually worn off. If you'd like a countdown that lasts longer, costs less, or doesn't end in a sugar crash before school, here are some ideas that work.

1. A puzzle a day

Kids love a mystery. Give them one small puzzle each morning, like a code to crack, a maze or a riddle, and let each answer reveal part of a bigger secret. It turns the countdown into a story they want to keep following.

That's exactly how Pip's Puzzle Advent Calendar works. It has 24 printable puzzles, and each one gives your child a letter. They collect the letters on a Message Board, and by Christmas Eve they've decoded a secret message from Pip the elf. There's a hint on every page and an answer key at the back for grown-ups.

2. A book a night

Wrap 24 books, including ones you already own and library books, and unwrap one each evening at bedtime. Old favourites feel new again when they come out of wrapping paper.

3. Kindness calendar

Write one small kind act on a slip of paper for each day: make a card for a neighbour, help with dinner, call a grandparent, leave a note for the mail carrier. Kids are proud of these, and it shifts the focus from getting to giving.

4. Activity envelopes

Fill 24 envelopes with things to do together: bake cookies, watch a Christmas movie in pyjamas, go look at the lights, build a blanket fort, have hot chocolate for breakfast. Put the bigger activities on weekends.

5. Ornament countdown

Hang one ornament on the tree each day, so the tree slowly fills up as Christmas gets closer. Making a homemade ornament on a few of the days stretches it into a craft activity too.

6. Joke a day

A Christmas joke tucked into a lunchbox or under a cereal bowl every morning. It costs nothing and gets a groan (and a grin) every time.

7. Save the best for last

Whatever you choose, make December 24 special. A bigger puzzle, a family game night or a Christmas Eve escape room gives the countdown a proper finale. If you want a ready-made one, Escape the Frozen Snow Globe is a printable escape room you can set up in about 15 minutes.

Start before December 1

The easiest advent calendar is the one that's ready on the first morning. Pick an idea this week, print or prepare it, and you're done.
