Twists and Wonders in the Dark Madness of Phantoms (Short Story)

Thunder cracked across the sky, rattling the windows as she clutched her cat, sprinting across the empty terrace. Rain spattered her hair, dripped into her collar, and soaked her shoes.

A flash of lightning revealed a drenched card at her feet. Scrawled in hurried, smudged ink were the words:

*“Do not go outside today.”*

The cat leapt onto her shoulder, ears perked, eyes fixed on a basket at the far end of the terrace. Inside, bright yellow lemons glimmered, unnaturally vivid against the storm-dark night, as if warning her of some invisible trap.

She fumbled, a lemon slipped, and rolled slowly toward the doorway. As she bent down to retrieve it, she noticed a damp corner of paper peeking under the door. Hands trembling, she pulled it free. Blurred letters swirled into focus:

*“Do not look back—they are already here.”*
