A thought-provoking listening and speaking lesson about resilience, problems, and how we respond to them

Help your learners build confidence in listening, speaking, prediction, interpretation, and critical thinking through a memorable story with a simple but powerful message.

Potatoes, Eggs, and Coffee Beans takes learners from personal discussion and prediction into detailed listening, story reconstruction, character exploration, reflection, and creative follow-up. The lesson is designed to generate genuine interest and give learners repeated opportunities to communicate meaningfully with partners and groups.

What the lesson develops

Learners practise:

  •  Listening for gist and detail
  •  Predicting from images and context
  •  Reconstructing a story
  •  Expressing and justifying opinions
  •  Discussing characters and relationships
  •  Interpreting metaphor and meaning
  •  Thinking creatively and empathetically
  •  Developing emergent vocabulary and language
  •  Reflecting on how people respond to difficult situations

A lesson built around meaningful communication

The lesson begins with a familiar topic: problems and the people we turn to for support.

From there, learners use images to predict the story before listening to check their ideas. Further listening tasks help them develop a more detailed understanding, while a cartoon-strip activity gives them the opportunity to reconstruct the story using their own language.

Once learners understand the story, the focus shifts from comprehension to interpretation. They explore the characters, imagine their backgrounds and motivations, discuss the qualities they value in family relationships, and reflect on the wider message of the story.

There is no need for every learner to arrive at the same interpretation. The activities encourage them to use their imagination, explain their thinking, ask questions, and respond to the ideas of others.

Flexible extension activities

The lesson includes optional activities that allow you to adapt it to your class, your available time, and your learners’ interests.

Extensions include deeper character exploration, discussion of family roles and relationships, reflective questions, and a general-knowledge coffee quiz.

The quiz can also become the starting point for a learner-led research project in which groups create their own quizzes and infographics on related topics.

What’s included

The lesson package includes:

  •  A complete teacher’s lesson plan
  •  Presentation slides
  •  Printable worksheets
  •  Audio
  • Video
  •  Listening and discussion activities

Why learners will engage with it

The story is simple enough to follow but open enough to interpret.

That combination allows learners to move beyond answering comprehension questions and start discussing ideas that matter: problems, resilience, support, relationships, change, and the different ways people react when life becomes difficult.

The result is a lesson that combines language development with meaningful discussion and personal response.
