The Family Read-Aloud Advent Calendar
Instead of Santas and elves, here you will find selections about Christ. Instead of greed and indulgence, these books are about hopeful expectation, generosity, preparation, repentance, and -- absolutely! -- joy.
This list recommends more than 60 Christmas-tide books of both literary and artistic merit to help nourish the minds and souls of the whole family. It especially focuses on selections befitting this time of the church year, including for Saint Nicholas and Saint Lucy's saint days and Epiphany. It also includes not explicitly religious classics, such as various renditions of "The Nutcracker" and "'Twas The Night Before Christmas." It is a great guide for building your family or church library and developing your family's cultural literacy.
This list also includes some longer books for family read-alouds, as well as a few good Advent-focused selections for parents. As an orthodox and liturgical-minded Protestant, I have tried to keep these books loosely in sync with the church calendar, such as reflecting saint days accepted broadly across various strains of Christianity. You will probably recognize some of these books, but unless you are exceptionally well-read I doubt you will know them all.
