Moria Scarf

I was inspired to create this design by the beautiful art of Alan Lee, and from watching the Lord of the Rings films. I was particularly drawn to the angular motifs on the columns, and the deconstructed hexagonal shapes that characterise the architecture. I am always trying to translate flat, hard surfaces into fabric, so this was a particularly fun process!

Size, Yarn, and Yardage
This scarf has been designed for worsted-weight yarn, but because the length is customisable, you can use any yarn you like.

Sample shown in:
Malabrigo Rios 192m/210yds per 100g in colourway “Winter Lake”.
I used 200g for my sample, but you can use more if you want a longer scarf. You will need at least 380m/415yds.

Sample measurements:
174cm / 68.5” long
20cm / 8” wide

Gauge
20st & 24rs per 10cm/4” on 4.5mm needles in stockinette stitch
Don’t worry if you can’t meet the gauge, as it matters very little in a scarf. I recommend prioritising getting a fabric that you’re happy with as this is the most important factor for comfort!

Needles
4.5mm/US 7 needles (or preferred size for the yarn you are using)

Notions
Locking stitch markers
Tapestry needle
*Scrap yarn/stitch holder

Skills needed
Cable knitting
*Kitchener stitch (for grafting at the end)

[* denotes an optional notion/technique, which are only needed if you take construction Option 2]
