FOOL – Right In His Own Eyes by Bro H
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who is wise listens to counsel.” [Verse 1] The simple man believes each word; The prudent tests his way. Wisdom cries aloud outside, And calls him to turn today: “How long will you love simplicity? How long will you hate knowledge?” Reproof still offers him the truth— His heart is not yet hardened. But let him learn to scorn correction; Let pride become his rule. The simple, still recoverable, Grows into a fool. He wants no counsel but his own, No answer but his choice; A fool delights not in understanding— Only airing his own voice. [Chorus] Right in his own eyes, Deaf to counsel and correction; There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of destruction. He hears the Word and will not do it, Builds on sand and calls it stone; Professing to be wise, they became fools— And the storm will make it known. [Verse 2] The fool says in his heart, “There is no God” to judge; The learned fool bows down to chance, And will not let it budge. The worldly fool built greater barns, And settled at his ease; “This very night your life is due”— The judgment broke his peace. The prophet is a fool when truth Is traded for applause; He speaks what itching ears demand, And will not name the cause. Then folly overtakes a people: “My people do not know Me; They are wise to do evil, But to do good they have no knowledge.” [Verse 3] The churches preach a lawless grace That asks for no obedience; They separate true faith from works, And make repentance hollow. They promise safety without endurance, Escape before the trial; They send the dead away at death To bliss or endless fire. They turn their ears away from law While praying to be heard; But even prayer is an abomination When men reject His Word. They cry, “Peace,” when there is no peace, And soothe rebellion’s pain; The shepherd feeds his own desires While sheep are led astray. [Verse 4] The prophets built a leaning wall, With mortar never tempered; They covered every crack with white, So none would see the fractures. They failed to show the people’s sin, Or turn them from captivity; They blessed the wall and called it sound, And then preached prosperity. But hail will sweep the refuge clean; The driving rain will fall. The Lord will expose its foundation— And down will come the wall. The lie that stood while skies were calm Will fail when storms descend. [Bridge] Ten virgins took their lamps and went; Five were wise, five fools. The foolish carried lamps without oil, Content with outward forms. At midnight came the cry; The foolish went away to buy. The wise went in; the door was shut— Preparedness cannot be borrowed. “Lord, Lord, open to us!” They called outside the door. But He answered, “I don’t know you.” Watch therefore. [Verse 5] The foolish builder heard Christ’s words, And never did obey; He raised his house upon the sand, And called his labor faith. The rain descended, floods arose; The winds beat on that place. It fell—and great was its fall— Its ruin could not hide. A creed may stand through pleasant years, A nation boast and thrive; But storms reveal what men have built, And whether faith was alive. “They not only practice what is evil, But approve of those who do.” Righteousness exalts a nation— Sin is any people’s shame. [Final Chorus] Right in your own eyes— Will you hear counsel and correction? There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of destruction. Turn at Wisdom’s reproof; Let her words be known to you. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge— But fools despise wisdom and instruction. The wise man listens when corrected; The fool returns to what he knew. The wall, the lamp, the house, the nation— What will the storm reveal in you?
