NOMINATED FOR THE COMMONWEALTH WRITERS' PRIZE

Born in Nigeria, Eyo is sent to England at ten years old for what she is told is an opportunity. Instead, she enters a world that exists in plain sight.

Over the years, she moves through houses and strangers, through adults who enrich themselves at her expense. She becomes, invisible, expendable, but never free.

As circumstances shift, Eyo begins to understand that belonging is not guaranteed, that survival leaves its mark, and that sometimes the only choices available are the ones that cost you everything.

Nominated for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and praised by readers for its emotional power, Eyo is a haunting novel about the quiet devastation of a childhood shaped by other people’s needs, and what it means to survive when you are not protected.

If you were captivated by the empowering narrative of Girl with the Louding Voice, then Eyo is a must-read addition to your library.

REVIEWS FOR EYO

Artboard 1

Compelling and beautifully written

This is an important piece of work. Sanusi gets into the psyche of the characters in a way that brings the humanity of the most depraved of them to life whilst never shying away from the hopelessness of the lives of those caught up as victims of the human trafficking cycle. The writing is so visceral that sometimes I felt I was in the room with Eyo. At some point despite knowing the way it will end, I kept willing a different ending. The arc of the story was such that I joined in Eyo’s hope and was convinced that life and her family will give her a break. ... had me weeping in the middle seat of a plane wondering what I can do to encourage change in my little corner of the world.

Astounding, emotional, brilliantly written

When you read what this book is about, you can’t imagine how eye-opening, shocking and readable it will be... I was completely drawn in, read it over a day, and it reminded me how powerfully books can give us real insight into difficult and horrific lives. I felt so much for Eyo, and all around her, and it really brought to life what being a trafficked child might be like - even if you think you know, this book will remind you how truly violently evil it is and why we should be shouting from the rooftops to stop it ... a beautifully, brilliantly written book that you won’t forget.

I will never forget this novel

A heartbreaking yet powerful book that shines a light on serious issues that keeps happening in Africa, Europe and around the world. Although it can be hard to read at some parts – because of the horrible things the main character has to face -, it’s a very important novel that helps us understand more about the most nasty side of our society and urges us to do whatever possible to help girls like Eyo. It really changes the way you see the world. I will never forget this novel. It’s also very well written and conveys a lot of emotions to the reader. The author did an excellent job and I would like to read more of her in the future
