Maurus Mitts

The Maurus Mitts are fingering-weight fingerless mitts, with interlocking cables that frame a reverse-stockinette thumb gusset. They will look best in a solid or semi-solid colorway, and are a great pattern to practice cabling without a cable needle. I would not recommend these for a first cabling project, but if you are an ambitious beginner who has enjoyed working cabled projects you will find this to be a pleasant challenge. Intermediate knitters and cable fans will find these an enjoyable knit for gifts or for themselves!

These mitts are named for my great-uncle Maurus, my grandfather’s youngest brother, who worked as an engineer his entire life. One of his great accomplishments was inventing the cable tie. Maurus saw the finger injuries sustained by electricians who used string to hand-tie wiring into place during airplane construction, and decided he could find a better way. His work is now ubiquitous, used for everything from electronic wiring to hanging Christmas lights – they’ve even gone interplanetary, as part of the electronics on the Mars Rover! Like his invention, these mitts will help protect your hands and add a little twist to your day!
