The Elephant Rope - Stories of Wisdom
A thought-provoking English lesson about perseverance, beliefs and learning from failure
Can our past failures stop us from achieving things we are capable of doing?
The Elephant Rope is an engaging, story-based English lesson that encourages A2+ learners to explore the power of beliefs, the importance of perseverance and the ways our experiences can influence our behaviour.
At the heart of the lesson is a simple but powerful story about a group of elephants held in place by small ropes. Although the elephants are strong enough to break free, they never try. Why not? As learners discover the answer, they are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences of success, failure and personal growth.
Through a carefully structured sequence of activities, learners develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while exploring the story's characters, events and underlying message.
What's included?
- Personalised lead-in activities that encourage learners to talk about animals, pets and kindness to animals.
- Visual storytelling tasks in which learners predict events, sequence images and reconstruct the story.
- Listening comprehension activities to develop understanding of the story and its key messages.
- A creative cartoon-strip activity that challenges learners to write their own dialogue and narration.
- Character exploration and discussion tasks that develop empathy, imagination and critical thinking.
- A fascinating elephant facts quiz that introduces learners to the remarkable abilities, behaviour and lives of elephants.
- Reflection and discussion questions that encourage learners to question the story's message and distinguish between fact and fiction.
More than just a story
What makes this lesson particularly valuable is its potential to generate meaningful communication. Learners don't simply listen to a story and answer questions. They predict, interpret, imagine, collaborate, discuss and express their own opinions.
The lesson also introduces an important element of critical thinking. Learners are invited to look beyond the inspirational message and consider whether the story accurately represents the lives and experiences of real elephants.
What will learners develop?
By the end of the lesson, learners will have had opportunities to:
- Improve their listening comprehension and storytelling skills.
- Develop vocabulary related to animals, feelings, abilities and beliefs.
- Practise expressing opinions, giving reasons and explaining ideas.
- Build confidence through pair and group communication.
- Explore the importance of perseverance and learning from mistakes.
- Develop empathy and awareness of animal welfare.
- Practise questioning information and distinguishing facts from fictional stories.
