Black History They Didn't Teach You
Most of the history we learn is the clean version. The real story is usually hidden in the back rooms where a few powerful people made the plans. For a long time, a small group called the Secret Nine made the rules for everyone else. They didn't need guns to control things. They just used pens and maps to build walls that were invisible but very real. They decided who got to move ahead and who was forced to stay behind.
This book is about the hidden network of people who refused to give up. It is about the secret ways they shared news and kept each other safe. It started in the dark of the ships and moved through the fields in songs that were actually maps. People even taught each other how to read by writing in the dirt under the cover of night. We are finally pulling these stories out of the old files and putting them where they belong. We are showing how the unfair rules of the past still affect our neighborhoods and our bank accounts today.
I’ve spent so many hours looking at these old records that my eyes are stinging. Sometimes it is hard to keep going when you see how much was taken from people who were just trying to live their lives. It makes me feel a quiet kind of anger that sits in my chest. But we are naming the names and telling the truth now. The silence is over. This story belongs to all of us.
