The Voice of the Word
The Word Christ entrusted still has a voice. But whose voice is it, and where can it still be found?
This third paper in the Scripture Opened trilogy takes up where The Rock left off: not who Christ built His Church on, but what He gave that Church to keep, to guard, and to hand on. It traces the apostolic teaching from the years before a single Gospel was written, through Paul's charge to the Thessalonians to hold what was taught by word and by letter alike, to the Church that received, sifted, and recognised the very canon of Scripture she did not invent.
Christ's last instruction to the Eleven was teach, not write, and His promise to be with them to the consummation of the world answers a mission, not a finished text. Paul calls the Church herself, not the Scriptures she reads, the pillar and ground of the truth. The paper follows that claim through the Council of Jerusalem, through Ignatius of Antioch and Augustine of Hippo, to Vincent of Lerins' test of what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all, and asks the reader directly: whose voice have you been listening to, and have you tested it against the one Christ actually sent?
