ALL THE TEA IN CHINA

All the Tea in China is a slim, atmospheric novella set in Yunnan, China in December 1986 — the early years of China's opening up. It follows Tom, a Chinese-speaking American working as a fixer and guide for a small British TV crew in search of a celebrated film director shooting near the Lao border.

The novella's most interesting formal choice is its use of documentary interludes — reproduced Ministry of Public Security intelligence circulars and telephone intercept logs, presented in faux-bureaucratic Chinese and English. These are genuinely funny and literarily astute. They defamiliarize the story, showing readers the same events from the perspective of a surveillance apparatus that is dogged, earnest, slightly comic in its solemnity, and utterly incapable of understanding idiom. The police analysts puzzling over the meaning of "give it a whirl" and debating whether "there is no bridge" might be a coded reference is a neat satirical stroke — a bureaucratic system built to detect spies encountering the sheer foreignness of casual English expression. This device also quietly reinforces one of the book's central themes: the comedy of mutual incomprehension, and the way political paranoia makes perfectly ordinary things look sinister.
