Battle of the Caucasus
The Battle of the Caucasus, fought between the Axis powers led by Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II, took place from July 1942 to October 1943. This pivotal campaign occurred in the rugged terrain of the Caucasus Mountains, an area of strategic significance due to its oil resources and geographical position. The Caucasus region, spanning from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, was crucial for both the Axis and Soviet forces. For Germany, capturing the oil fields of Baku in Azerbaijan was essential to fuel their war machine. Additionally, controlling the Caucasus would provide a strategic advantage for further operations in the Middle East and link up with Axis forces in North Africa.
