"He does it all day" is almost never true. When you shade a scatterplot for two weeks, the pattern usually jumps off the page: the block after lunch, the writing period, Monday mornings. Once you know when, you can start asking why.

What's included:

• A two week scatterplot grid in half hour blocks

• A simple shading code so anyone on the team can mark it in two seconds

• A how to read page with what to look for and what to do with it

How I'd use it:

Keep it on a clipboard and have whoever is in the room shade it. Paras are great at this. After two weeks, sit down and look for the dark rows and the empty ones. The empty ones matter too, because that is where the student is doing well and you can learn what is different.

The shading code is simple on purpose: no behavior, some, or a lot. If a code takes more than two seconds, the busiest person in the room stops using it by Wednesday. Fill it in at the end of each block, not at the end of the day, when everything blurs together. Bring both weeks to the team meeting and put them side by side. You will see the same rows light up, and it changes the conversation from "he is always like this" to "what is going on at 1:30?"

Who it's for: Teachers, paras, and case managers. Grades K 12.
