A calm down corner can turn into a hideout, a punishment spot, or a beanbag nobody uses. The difference is almost never the stuff in it. It is whether the kids were taught how to use it, when to leave it, and what happens when they get back.

What's included:

• A setup guide for school and home

• A calm tools checklist

• "How to use this spot" steps and corner rules

• A teaching plan for week one

• Check out sheets for younger and older kids

• An adult use log

How I'd use it:

Teach the corner on a calm day, before anyone needs it. Practice going in and coming back like a fire drill. The check out sheet is the piece most corners are missing, because it gives the kid a way back to the group. Families can use the same steps at home so the routine is the same in both places.

Everything prints well in color or black and white, and the posters are big enough to read from across a small room. The adult use log is there so you can tell if the corner is helping or turning into an escape. If one student is in it six times a day, that is information for the team, not a reason to shut it down. Look at what happens right before each visit.

Who it's for: Teachers, paras, and families. Grades PreK 8.
