Introduction by the Artist

I am an Artist in South Africa with a strong interest in Archaeology and the archaeological process. I received my Masters Degree (Visual Arts) from the University of South Africa. During my studies I embarked on extensive theoretical research, and practical art making through a variety of media and techniques.  I majored in Printmaking, using a collagistic approach, which entails an accumulation and superimposing of layers of images and shapes.

Whilst completing my studies, I participated in professional archaeological excavations in both Israel and South Africa. This gave me the opportunity to gain a background in Landart installations, that focused on the layering processes - the overlay of the past with the present.

As a traveller and missionary, my impressions often capture a bird’s eye view of Africa and many countries. I exhibited widely in South Africa and Australia and some of my work is presented in private as well as permanent collections of universities and colleges. SASOL Ltd also acquired some of my work for their art promotions.

My involvement and exposure to the archaeological process, had a significant and meaningful impact on me personally, and on my professional work as an Artist. I began to explore and experience the archaeological excavation as a metaphor for my personal, introspective delving and searching process, which consequently began to manifest strongly in my art making processes.

When a road was to be built at Thaba Eco, certain artefacts of archaeological significance were found. I was informed by Thaba, which prompted me to contact Professor Revil Mason from the Witwatersrand University. He agreed to perform an Archaeological Excavation in which I collaborated for the entire process. I became one of Thaba Eco’s Green Partners and created two on-site Landart installations named DIGGINGS & MEDITATION TRAIL that were made up of several artworks.

The MEDITATION TRAIL was created after I was approached by Thaba Eco to establish an art project with the brief: “a place where people can rest and reflect in the beautiful surroundings”. We decided on the theme of FAITH, HOPE and LOVE.

When people are walking through the DIGGINGS & MEDITATION TRAIL installations, they do not always understand the stories associated with each artwork and how they link with one another. The idea of a book transpired, which developed into a brochure-like book that would accompany walkers on the trail. It would then help them understand and experience the meaning and significance of each artwork on a personal level.
