A structured five-layer clinical tool for therapists. Map the self-compassion deficit, inner critic, mood impact, developmental roots, and build a personalized repair direction; with a full synthesized clinical summary.

What This Tool Does

Most self-compassion work in therapy stalls because it stays at the psychoeducation level. A client learns what self-compassion is. They understand the concept. And then nothing changes.

This tool is built for the clinical work that comes after that moment. It moves through five structured layers to map not just what the client lacks, but why the deficit exists, what it is doing to their mood and nervous system, where it came from, and what the specific repair direction looks like for this client.

At the end, the tool generates a full clinical summary that synthesizes all five layers into actionable clinical language. Not a list of what you entered. A clinical interpretation.

The Five Layers

•      Layer 1: Self-Compassion Baseline - Identify which Neff components are blocked, rate current self-compassion capacity, and map the client's relationship with themselves including deserving beliefs and self-talk patterns.

•      Layer 2: Inner Critic Mapping - Classify critic type (punishing, perfectionistic, dismissive, comparative, guilt-inducing), identify content and language, map primary triggers, rate intensity, and assess how ego-syntonic the critic is.

•      Layer 3: Mood and Nervous System Impact - Track how the deficit manifests in mood, behavioral patterns, and nervous system response. Map the relational impact and identify the clinical self-criticism cycle.

•      Layer 4: Origins and Barriers - Identify developmental roots, family system learning, cultural and systemic factors, the protective function of the critic, and current barriers to engaging in self-compassion.

•      Layer 5: Compassionate Voice Development - Define what the compassionate voice needs to say for this specific client, identify skills to build first, select modality fit, assess readiness, and establish the repair direction.

The Clinical Summary

The summary does not reflect your inputs back at you. It synthesizes them. Across all five layers, it generates:

•      Clinical Profile Narrative - A synthesized paragraph naming the deficit pattern, blocked domains, and deserving belief structure in clinical prose ready for case conceptualization.

•      Inner Critic Classification - Names the critic type, its protective function, awareness level, and whether externalization must precede compassionate voice work.

•      Mood Impact Interpretation - Draws the clinical line between the critic pattern and the emotional and behavioral presentation, including the suppressor mechanism that keeps the cycle locked.

•      Developmental Hypothesis - A clinical hypothesis about origin and maintenance, written as clinical language, not a summary of your notes.

•      Ranked Intervention Direction - Sequenced to what this client actually needs first based on their specific profile. Somatic stabilization if shutdown is present. Critic externalization if fused with identity. Skill building and modality recommendations layered in the correct clinical order.

The standard: a therapist should be able to read that summary and use it immediately in a session note, treatment plan, supervision session, or case conceptualization.

Use This Tool When

•      A client is stuck in shame spirals or self-blame that does not shift with cognitive approaches alone

•      Harsh self-criticism is disrupting mood, relational functioning, or therapeutic progress

•      Perfectionism, people-pleasing, or self-sabotage patterns are blocking movement

•      The client understands self-compassion conceptually but cannot access it experientially

•      You need a structured root-level clinical framework, not just exercises or worksheets

•      Treatment planning requires a self-compassion conceptualization that goes beyond surface symptoms

This tool is designed for licensed mental health professionals - licensed counselors, therapists, social workers, and psychologists - who are doing active clinical work with clients where self-compassion is a central clinical issue.
