The Spell Shawl

Cast a spell anytime with this fun and fast shawl. Use a gradient set or skeins of fading speckles. I’ve done both, and can’t decide which I like better. Better make even more ;)
This is one of my favorite knits ever. Super fun to make, with a rhythmic, intuitive, and highly textural stitch pattern to ensure that you’re never bored. I’ve made this in gradient sets and using anywhere between 2 and 5 complementary speckles. I’ve done scrappy versions. I’ve made the shape shown above, and I’ve made an increase-section-only version that has lately become my go-to. In other words, this shawl is truly pattern perfection.
There are so many ways to work this shawl, and because I’m so obsessed with it, and have been playing with scrappy versions, it’s altogether possible that more may be added at really any time! Read through all of the PATTERN NOTES, and decide if you’d like to work the original pattern, which has you increasing to a point then decreasing back down, or if you’d like to work the increase-only version.
YARN
900-1100 yards/823-1006 m total fingering-weight yarn.
For the three-color version (gold & white), I used Hedgehog Fibres Sock in Fool’s Gold (cA, 325 yds)/297 m; Boombox (cB, 415 yds/379.5 m), and Heyday (cC, 325yds/297 m).
For the three-color Knitted Wit version (reds), I used Knitted Wit Merino Shimmer Fingering in Sundress (cA, 325 yds/297 m); Berry Picking (cB, 415 yds/379.5 m), and Endless Summer (cC, 325 yds/297 m).
For the scrappy increase-only version (yellows to pinks), I used 8 different +/- 30-gram leftovers from sock projects past.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Gold & white three-color version (lightly blocked): wingspan: 91”/231 cm; depth at center: 15”/38 cm.
Reds three-color version (vigorously blocked): wingspan: 99”/251.5 cm; depth at center: 26”/66 cm.
Yellows-to-pinks scrappy increase-only version: 94”/ 239 cm x 59”/150 cm x 70”/178 cm, (lightly blocked).
