Mary’s Prayer and the separately published A War Veteran Holds His Son are intended as contemporary parallels to the traditional choral Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. They are companion pieces, rather than replacements.

This Magnificat, like the original, is based on the Virgin Mary’s response to the knowledge that she is pregnant with the Son of God, having been “overshadowed by the power of the Most High”. Her joyful song is often repeated in churches, but sadly there is also a history – in the Church and elsewhere – of condemnation and cruel treatment of subsequent single mothers and their babies. In this version, therefore, Mary thinks

beyond her own situation, and remembers these other mothers, praying for an end to such unwarranted denunciation and instead that we celebrate motherhood unconditionally.
