They put five monkeys in a cage, put a ladder and hung a banana from the top. The monkeys immediately went for the banana, and then they started hosing them down with cold water.

They cooled down a little bit, but as soon as someone climbed for a banana, they were all sprinkled with cold water without exception. So, it turned out that as soon as some monkey climbed for a banana, the others immediately began to bite and beat him, because no one wants to be pelted with cold water. Everyone is sitting there, the banana is hanging, no one wants it anymore.

They remove one monkey from the cage, and put a new one in. The monkey, unsuspecting, sees the banana, and, accordingly, climbs for it. And then they start beating her in every possible way. Eventually, she calms down and leaves her attempts.

Another monkey is replaced. The new monkey sees the banana, climbs up and, accordingly, gets a beating. And, most interestingly, the monkey that was not watered down, also takes part in the beating.

They replaced one more monkey, and another, and another... this is what happened: there were five monkeys in the cage, all without any water, with a banana hanging on the top, but nobody touched it! Why? Because that's the way it's supposed to be!
