Built by Clyde Engineering in the 1930s, the steel bodied AAR carriages, commonly known in the industry as the "clyde cars", were a feature of many luxurious services on the Tasmanian Government Railways' extensive 3ft 6in rail network. Historical images see these buffet cars on services such as the famed "Tasman Limited", and the Launceston to Hobart Expresses - fitting with the streamlined TGR R class.

The "Clyde Cars" were an open carriage, with seating on both sides of the carriage, and a walkway down the middle, with the carriage being split into two bespoke sections. One half of the carriage featured a refreshments bar, with associated kitchen, tables, and chairs, for the paying customers of the service to endulge in at their leisure. The latter half of the carriage featured simple passenger seating, in an open saloon type environment.

These features and more have been faithfully recreated for Trainz, in three accurate liveries.
Including:
  • Red and Yellow, alike that seen on the "Tasman Limited".
  • Maroon and Cream modified Tasmanian livery, alike that seen on the "Bellarine Railway".
  • Green with Yellow lining, alike that seen on the Launceston to Hobart Express.
The models feature accurately represented interiors, (accessed by pressing 1, can be explored further by activating freecam), 3ft 6in animated bogies, modern PBR material texturing, and were designed based on accurate and original (scanned) drawings and plans, of all elevations of the vehicle.

The PBR texturing methods used in this model yeild ultra realistic results, including:
  • Shiny metal surface reflections on all painted metal surfaces on the carriage, with bump maps to show realistic bumps, warps, and wobbles that would be seen on the surface in the real world
  • Realistic levels of bump and shine on the roof, to realistically represent a canvas roof material, as is prototypical of all older rollinstock roofs, including that of the AAR cars.
  • Translucent window textures, with special bump and shine maps, to yeild a shiny, glass like surface, with the protoypical dimples and wobbles of the material, while maintaining glass like transparency.
  • Baked textures, meaning even the lowest end computer can run a fairly realistic looking model, with some darker and lighter areas, hinting at shade, without having full shaders on.
These carriages will look at home among any 3ft 6in railway yard, our out on the mainline behind your own luxury passenger train!

For those looking to model the Tasmanian rollingstock ecosystem within Trainz, it should be noted that I have models of the wooden bodied TGR AAL carriages, as well as Sentinel-Cammell SP powered and unpowered steam railmotors, which i intend on releasing to this website very soon. These should complement the clyde cars, and any other Tasmanain Rail scene perfectly, once they are released.

Please join the Official Taipan Discord, to see the latest updates, release information, screenshots and more.

For those interested, the models were created in Blender 2.9, with the textures, parameter and normal maps made in GIMP, both of which are free to download. If you need help with your own locomotives or rollingstock
